Sentara Health, a 12-hospital system serving Virginia and North Carolina, today announced the deployment of a new AI case management solution co-developed with Regard, expanding an established partnership between the two organizations beyond physician-focused diagnosis and documentation to support a broader range of workflows.
After evaluating more than 100 AI technologies for the acute care management team, Sentara chose Regard to bring the same technology already supporting clinicians at the bedside to its case management teams. The two organizations worked together to customize and tailor the platform around Sentara’s case management workflows to replace hours of manual chart review.
With Regard, Sentara’s case managers can now query the chart in plain language to quickly surface patient history, status changes, screenings, and other information needed for day zero discharge planning. They can also instantly see what’s changed in the last 24 hours, which is particularly valuable when weekend caseloads can exceed 100 patients per case manager. Teams can bring those insights into daily medical discharge rounds (MDRs) to support faster, more informed care transitions and improve outcomes, including lower readmissions and shorter lengths of stay. As Sentara looks to expand the technology across acute care and into ambulatory care, the health system estimates it could save nearly 90,000 hours — the equivalent of adding more than 40 full-time employees and nearly $5 million in labor costs.
“It’s incredible to think about how much time we used to spend piecing together a patient’s story before they could even start discharge planning,” said Dr. Rollin Reeder, Chief Health Information Officer at Sentara. “Now, with Regard, I have information from the chart I could not have found on my own, sometimes critically important information that could change the course of management. This is transformational in many ways, but especially in how effectively and confidently we can move patients through the system.”
“When we saw what Regard could do around diagnosis and clinical reasoning, we knew there was an opportunity to expand their reach beyond physician workflows,” added Dr. Reeder. “We brought their team a simple idea for how the technology could support other critical functions across the organization, and they turned it into an effective solution. It started with a need at Sentara, but what we built together has the potential to set a new standard for how case management teams operate.”
The launch of this solution also marks Regard’s expansion beyond diagnosis and documentation into broader health system workflows, positioning the platform as an active partner across clinical and operational needs. Because every team relies on the same underlying clinical evidence, Regard is uniquely positioned to extend its award-winning diagnostic intelligence beyond physicians, giving care teams a consistent, complete view of the patient to support faster, more informed decisions.
“We’ve built an intelligence platform that physicians trust, surfacing more than 20 million diagnoses that they’ve accepted, with supporting clinical evidence,” said Eli Ben-Joseph, CEO and co-founder of Regard. “It’s a natural next step for us to extend that complete clinical picture that is reliable and credible to operational teams, giving health systems a consistent layer of support across the organization. That’s the exciting part about getting it right at the bedside. You quickly start to see other high-impact areas where the technology can make a difference.”
